Why would you take a hypnobirthing course?
What does a course involve, what will I learn?
2) It changes the language and perception of birth. No more words like pain and contractions. It’s powerful surges and feelings. Fear is reduced and confidence increased. The words we use can effect our physiology. How does it feel to say powerful surge instead of contraction?
It’s also a choice , if you are not bothered by the medical terms of course use them!
It’s also about understanding what is happening with your womb muscles and checking whether the language resonates with the experience.
That is science.
5) Have confidence! You are a mammal, your body knows what it is doing. Trust your instincts and intuition. Your mind can work against you, you have probably been conditioned to believe that birth is painful as most of us are. We will look into your beliefs and how we can change them. Birth can be euphoric when baby arrives if all the conditions for a positive experience have been met. This is due to that high of oxytocin and endorphins.
6) Birth without unnecessary interventions, know why inductions are suggested, how to refuse if you do not want them and why to accept them if needed. Become empowered by knowing your options and not just to go along with whatever is offered. You have choices and rights!
7) I include antenatal information, giving you the knowledge of what to expect and an understanding of the ‘system’ knowing your options will put you in a stronger position to make informed decisions.
8) Your birth partner will feel more involved, giving them also tools and guidance and developing a deeper bond with the baby due to their involvement throughout the process. Preparing your partner to be ready and capable when the big day comes. I will give your partner a short massage and reflexology routine they can use.
9) Make friends with others on the same journey as you who could become friends for life! Priceless. Or if you want private classes I can come to your home and bespoke the course to you and your specific needs.
10) Receive ongoing and additional support from me. I will be there to support you afterwards too. As a reflexologist and pregnancy massage specialist I can also give you additional techniques in these areas to use in labour and throughout pregnancy.
11) Hypnobirthing can encourage a shorter first stage of labour.
Hypnobirthing course in Letchworth, Hitchin, Welwyn and Stevenage. I also do private classes throughout North Herts.
I trained with fertility2birth’s Juliet Hollingsworth who is the author of ‘hypnobirth yourself’ she is a guiding light on the birth experience.

Reflexology and massage have been shown to be very effective when used in labour, this is why I use them in addition to the course. I also include techniques from Suzanne Yates who is a world-reknowned expert in supporting pregnancy & birth.
Your questions answered:
Who should do a hypnobirthing course?
One of the biggest misconceptions about hypnobirthing is the idea that it is only for certain birth options. For example, some women have asked me if it’s for mums who are planning to have home births with no pain relief. My answer is that it is for ALL women and ALL birthing decisions and outcomes, this is at least how I work. It will also help and support you if you do not want pain relief. Many women who hypnobirth find they do not need it but it is there as an option and you shouldn’t feel that you have somehow ‘failed’ if you decide you want it. We certainly don’t need competition and judgements in the way we approach labour and birth and should all make the choices that feel right to us after weighing up our options.
I truly advocate for a positive birth experience rather than a particular way of baby being born into the world. Caesaerean Sections and interventions can lead to positive birth experiences and natural vaginal deliveries can lead to negative birth experiences or can be traumatic depending on what is occurring with mum (especially with fear and anxiety), baby and whether she feels safe in her environment (including the people she has around her). A natural vaginal delivery where the environment and conditions are good, and mum is calm and relaxed throughout, holds the potential for an incredibly euphoric and empowering experience. But if this cannot be attained for medical or other reasons it doesn’t mean that you can’t still have a beautiful and empowering experience. Ultimately women need to feel safe and heard in labour.
What if it doesn’t work? Will I have wasted my money?
As far as we can see the fear that it will not work is the only reason that people would not want to take the HypnoBirth course. The HypnoBirth course is about being in control and preparing for the birth of your baby in the best way possible. Yes, many of our clients choose to take the course because they do not want to take pain relief drugs, or they do not want any medical intervention. However many of our couples just want to be as prepared as possible. The majority of couples that we work with have births requiring no medical intervention and pain relief, however some have had a little intervention. In these cases the couples have said they are so glad they did the course as it allowed them to remain calm, relaxed and in control whilst there was a lot of drama going on around them
I don’t believe it will work for me
Firstly think about what you want to achieve. Are you looking for an orgasmic birth or do you just want a birth in which you are prepared, calm completely in control and empowered? We cannot guarantee a feeling free birth, but we can give you the techniques to feel calm, in control and totally prepared. The HypnoBirth course is as much about birth preparation – containing a huge amount of medical knowledge – as it is about pain reduction. Treat it like you would any antenatal course, but know that this course is in a comfortable environment, with personal care, so you can ask any questions you want without feeling silly. We find that many of our clients ask us questions that they didn’t feel comfortable asking in the less intimate environment of other antenatal classes. We have the expertise on board to answer any questions for you.
I don’t understand how it will help me
Firstly you will gain a vast amount of medical birthing knowledge from the course. The programme was written by a hypnotherapist, staff from busy maternity units, a small part by a midwife and the rest a surgeon’s assistant. It is therefore important information that all pregnant couples should be told, but are often not. Secondly the course will teach you how to relax using hypnosis. This does not mean you will have to be in a state of hypnosis when giving birth but it means you will be able to remain calm, resulting in a quicker delivery. Did you know when in fear, or stressed, the body automatically goes into the fight or flight response? When in this response labour stops or slows. This can be seen with animals in the wild. If they sense a predator their labour will stop until it is safe again. We teach you how to get back in control of your body so that your body does not kick into this automatic response. Babies born using hypnosis tend to be calmer, feed better, sleep better and experience less trauma, because they are more often than not gently and calmly breathed into the world at their own pace. Scientific research has also shown that the babies usually have higher Agpar scores as well (a measure of how well your baby is doing immediately after the birth, and then five minutes later).
I don’t want to be out of control
This is the exact reason you should take our course. People often think that those in a hypnotic state are out of control, or maybe under the control of the hypnotist. This is as far from the truth as possible. When in hypnosis you are actually very much in control. The HypnoBirth course is all about taking back control. Imagine lying on the beach with the sun shining down on you, not too hot, not too cold, with the sound of waves lapping in the distance. This is hypnosis!
What if I want pain relief?
This is ok, the HypnoBirth course is all about having the birth YOU want and not the birth others tell you to have. If you want pain relief you can have pain relief, but you will be safe in the knowledge that you have made the decision whilst in control and therefore will not regret your decision later on. You will probably find that you will have no need for pain relief anyway, but there are not restrictions on anything you may choose to do.
I had a C-Section last time can I still do the course?
Of course you can. The course is designed more towards a natural birth and we have had successful VBAC deliveries. If you are having a caesarean again, there are still many things in the course that would benefit you. It is worth just mentioning to your hypnotherapist that you are a VBAC mum or if you will be having a caesarean again so that the course can be personalised towards you a little more.
Is the course just for the Mum?
Our course is designed for the birthing Mum and her birth partner. Often the birth partner is the father of the baby but many have a friend, parent or doula. Certain parts of the course require practise at home. This practise creates intimate time between you as a couple and many of our clients have remarked that this is their favourite part of the course. The course enables your birthing partner to become a central part of the birthing process, helping you to stay calm and focus on techniques that you have been taught. This can be even more important if the birthing partner is not the father of the baby as they can feel even more removed from the whole process and ‘useless’. Imagine how close they can feel to you and the baby being an active part of the birthing process.
Who should do the HypnoBirth course?
EVERYONE! We cannot think of anyone that would not benefit from taking the HypnoBirth course. It is educational, informative, enjoyable and achieves great results.
I would love to support and guide you on your journey towards meeting your baby.
I have been very lucky to have been trained in birth support by the highly renowned Suzanne Yates (wellmother.org) and Juliet Hollingsworth (author of ‘Hypnobirth Yourself’) and co course creator of the fertility2birth hypnobirthing course (fertility2birth.com).
I am also a trained maternity reflexologist and massage therapist so I incorporate a real range of techniques and wisdom into my course days. Teaching birth partners techniques to use for labour so they often feel they have an active role.
With my second child I used hypnobirthing techniques and the difference I felt throughout labour was undeniable. I found a rhythm and felt in control and couldn’t believe it when they told me I was 8cm. Hypnobirthing is empowering and we need to connect to the wisdom and intelligence of our bodies whilst asking our minds to work with us rather than against us.
